Well, for some things it’s not, but when it comes to signage it most certainly is!
When you start thinking about designing a sign for your business, make sure you remember that the size of your lettering is an extremely important factor when looking at a sign from a particular distance. As a general guideline, lettering must be within a certain size range relative to the distance that you are viewing it from. Here’s a table that will quickly help you determine the right size lettering for your sign assuming the viewer’s vision is clear.
Minimum Lettering
Size (mm) |
Distance
(m) |
50-60mm | 30 |
90-100 mm | 60 |
175-185mm | 120 |
275-285mm | 180 |
350-360mm | 240 |
450-460mm | 300 |
600-610mm | 400 |
It’s important to think about the distance from which your sign is going to be read so that you can ensure that it is clear and legible. For example, lettering on the back of a car need only be 50-60mm given that the car behind would be within a 30 metre range. On the other hand, lettering on a billboard would need to be at least 460mm to ensure that it is visible from 300 metres or more. In any event, use the general rule of “the bigger the better” without going overboard.
Keep these values in mind when having your sign designed so that it attracts attention to your business and makes it easy for people to find you.
