There’s a rumour going round that the new Qantas advertising agency is going to dump the current TV commercials that feature Peter Allen’s “I still call Australia home”. I wonder whether they’re gunna drop that theme altogether which may mean we won’t hear it when, after a few days, weeks or months in foreign climes we board a Qantas aircraft and we’re itching for home. That music and the (generally but less frequently) reassuring Aussie accents of the cabin crew tell us that that we’re almost home.
I dunno about you but those commercials with the kids singing their song all over the world were quintessentially Australian and served to do what good commercials should do… embed the brand in my mind so that it becomes my automatic first choice and even encourages me to buy even though I hadn’t been thinking of it.
Still let’s wait and see what the new New York based (with Aussie offshoot) agency comes up with. Maybe it’ll become just as iconic too.
Etihad Airways are flying high after great growth from startup. They have just launched a new TVC to crow about their performance. Personally this commercial does about as much for me as it does for the headphone wearing couple lying on the beach.
Maybe the changes are dictated by a lessening in enquiries from the current commercials but, if they were still generating results, why change? A guess I reckon coz airlines never ask you, when you book, what made you choose them anyway.
Winno I couldn’t agree more, while I used to travel alot overseas, whenever I boarded a Qantas Plane it was like I was already on home soil, I have flown on a lot of airlines over the years, still loved hearing I still call Australia Home, and that quintisential ‘G’Day” it was like being home already no matter where you boarded the plane, if they change it they do so at their peril, Winno Keep up the FANTASTIC work that you do, regards Ray Allen Monash Men’s Shed Coordinator.
Thanks Ray! Totally agree.. nothing better than hearing that Aussie accented “G’day” after a few weeks of hearing other langauges and accents. Of course with Qantas recruiting more foreign based crews that welcome is getting rarer. BTW I’m sure my readers would love to hear more about whatever a “Monash Men’s Shed” is!
