“When I was a kid”, he says old and grumpily “We didn’t have these American festivities. But we did have Guy Fawkes, now there was great night to celebrate on the fifth of November… fireworks, bonfires and a lot of fun.”

Oops that’s me talking and sometimes I even amaze myself by the opinions I spout.

What’s not to like about kids having a bit of fun (but in these not so carefree days, I do worry about them knocking on strange doors at night) and who cares that we’ve imported the custom from America? After all, the Guy Fawkes celebrations I so fondly remember were imported from England and commemorated the attempt by Guy Fawkes and his mates to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Nothing to do with Australia, but we used to love it.

So wherever these celebrations and customs come from, who cares?  Let’s have fun and enjoy them.

And let’s not get too politically correct and try to abolish those ones that may “offend” some people. For example, we love like Christmas with its baby in the manger, the three wise men, the carol singing and all the rest. If you don’t like it… ignore it.  Don’t try to take it away from those that love it.

So this Halloween enjoy, or ignore.  It’s your choice but don’t rain on someone elses parade (and have some lollies just in case the kids come knocking).

Have a f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c day… Winno
