Recently final rules to allow businesses to register their own brand name (such as .deloitte or .melbourneit), or generic terms like .lawyer, .music, .bank, .shop, .camera and even cities like .paris, .nyc or .sydney.  This new change opens up a wealth of new marketing and advertising opportunities for businesses on top of the usual .com, .com.au or .net.au domain names already available on the Internet.  Read more…

As the BIT newsletter points out, it means that you will

  • be able to register domain names like “.hotel”, “.shop” and “.lawyer”, for example).
  • also be able to register domains for your business location. For example, if you’ve registered www.joespizza.com.au, you could also register www.joespizza.adelaide and www.joespizza.shop.

Apparently you’ll be able to do this from mid-year so keep an eye out for the opportunity when it arises.
