With Mother’s Day just gone and millions of mothers having had breakfast in bed (and probably all over the bed!) and receiving lots of sincerely given but unwanted presents I had to laugh at some of the suggestions that advertisers made to gladden the heart of any mother.
For example, a butcher felt that it would make Mummies day if the kids gave her a leg of lamb and a dentist suggested that a gift certificate for dental care would be welcome. I can just imagine Mum’s face being wreathed in smiles as she opened her gift wrapped package of lamb or contemplated the certificate to encourage her to go to the dentist.
The height of absurdity was this ad from Steggles, who recommended on Mothers day morning that a son or daughter go out and purchase a chicken, bring it home and roast it with all the vegetables to mother’s utter delight.
Alright, alright, I’m being a bit hypercritical… it wasn’t really all that absurd and was meant to be a bit of fun.
In any event it captured my attention which is what a good advertisement should do although I must reluctantly admit that I didn’t go out and buy a chook.
P.S. Some of you may remember I talked to you about Jodie McGregor Flowers in my last enewsletter …well, ever the perfectionist, Stu (Jodie’s husband and creative genius) made sure that he followed up his emailing with a reminder message on the Friday before Mother’s Day. You can see it here…..
This is funny how some advertisers create such offers that could not create a good impression about what service they are offering for the occasion.
Hi Winston,
I’m viewing this on the road quite a few days after your initial email has gone out. For one of the few times in my life, I disagree with you. I think the original Mothers Day ad’ is great. So many ladies have a token grin it and bare it start to the day then still have to prepare dinner. This is saying ‘relax it’s been sorted’. I think it will hit the mark.
I couldn’t view the ‘flowers’ email as the pics didn’t show up on my iPad in Uluru or Alice Springs. I’m sure it’s good but I’ll vote for Steggles!
Kind Regards
Jurek Leon
Great Jurek! Of course I come from a household where the men routinely prepare meals so I couldn’t understand the other point of view even though I tried to walk in the target market’s moccasins!
