I’m a believer that in relationships with customers and clients it’s always a great policy to be polite and courteous. Only as a last resort should you “heavy” them. We’ve been getting our newspapers from the same newsagency for the last 35 years and have always paid our account regularly every month.

That’s why we were a bit shocked when we got this invoice which certainly rejoices in being a bit nasty. “Failure to pay will result in stopping of service. Services of a debt collection company will be used.” Seems pretty heavy for a never-failed-to-pay customer of 35 years don’t you think? If they were concerned, perhaps a polite note like “This account may have escaped your attention and we would appreciate early payment” might have been a little more friendly.

Courtesy, not

Never forget that a relationship built up over years can be fractured with a few wrong words!
