I often wonder who writes some of the letters/emails sent by big corporations to their customers. The letter below is a case in point.
It makes you wonder who wrote the simple communiqué and, more importantly, who checked it.
As you will see, they ask for my help in a survey which I am happy to give and tell me to begin at the ‘Take survey button (sic). The only trouble is that there is no “Take survey” button to be found. There is a “Launch survey” button which proves to be the button to use.
That’s why I reckon a suggestion made by a bunch of volunteers of whom I am part was excellent. They suggested to the local Council that they set up a panel of older volunteers to check that all communications issued by the council were acceptable for clarity, content and readability. They weren’t going to act as censors but would purely review “stuff” to make sure everyone could read and understand it.
The “how’s things?” call is one of those techniques every businessperson should use. It works beautifully for anybody who is serious about making their business successful. In fact, if you’re not using it you should be. Want to learn more? Buy Winston’s downloadable discussion on the “How’s Things?” call here. “Part of the Winno’s Wise Words series”.
