No I’m not talking some sort of foreign language or in code. That’s just an acronym I used to use when I first started in the speaking business and talked about my achievements in giving up smoking, losing weight and running my first marathon.
It stands for “you can do anything you want to do if you want to do it enough” and I’ve always been a big believer in that because it’s the constant reminder I used to give up smoking a hundred cigarettes a day, lose 50 kg in weight and run a sub three-hour marathon. After I achieved those things people told me that they never believed I would be able to do them. My response was always the same… “You might have believed that but I never did… I always believed that I could do it!”
That acronym has been inscribed on the memory stone of my mind and now I tackle tasks with exactly the same approach.
I was reminded of that at the weekend when Hawthorn, who were playing in the AFL grand final, were regarded as the underdogs and every pundit predicted a certain Sydney win. Just about everybody thought that Sydney would win except the Hawthorn team. I’m sure they believed they could do anything they wanted to do and they surely wanted to do it enough.
The result is history… they thrashed Sydney!
So, no matter what your interest in football or what code you subscribe to or what task you want to tackle just remember this… you can do anything you want to do if you want to do it enough!
The “want to do it enough” is the real question. Ask yourself do I really, really, really want to do this? Am I really committed to making this happen? Will I do the things that I have to do to achieve it?
As I think I’ve said before, it’s like the hen and pig when it comes to breakfast. They are both part of the breakfast but the hen is only involved whereas the pig is committed.
Are you a pig? If so YCDAYWTDIYWTDIE!
Wow. I actually worked out the acronym by myself. The key word is want. Most of us (myself included) think we’d like to…… (and as a result we never push hard enough) instead of wanting to it badly enough. We only have ourselves to blame
Full marks Jeff… well done!
