Recognition
A survey a little while ago revealed what people wanted in a job. Recognition, both publicly and privately, was high on the list. Because so many sales people reckon they are told when they’re not doing well but never get recognition when they are performing well there must be an element of truth in it.
Sure, the top performer always gets recognition but rarely do middle order performers, who may have lifted their game substantially, ever get recognised. A good team leader will look for opportunities to recognise the achievements of all performers publicly amongst their peers.
Private recognition is also very powerful. This can be as simple as sending a personal letter home to a team member just to let them know they’ve done a great job. Birthdays, anniversaries or when they solve a problem are typical of the thousands of little opportunities you can find to make them feel special.
