Authority and responsibility

One of the gripes I constantly hear from bosses is that their team member left to take a higher responsibility job and that “if they’d only just waited they could have had the same opportunity here.”

Don’t make your team members leave to get authority and responsibility, give it to them sooner rather than later. Remember that, before you became a boss, somebody trusted you and gave you responsibility and authority early in your career to test whether you could deliver. When offered a challenge most people will rise to the occasion, particularly if you act in a mentoring role. In a nutshell, give them responsibility early so that they stretch beyond their current ability to attain and achieve.
