Dr Peter Holsman, a qualified GP and natural health practitioner, is a great friend of mine and his tips and ideas help me keep feeling fantastic! I thought this article was worth a read if you’d like some tips to starting the day with vim and vigour!
How do you start your day? Is it something like this?
The alarm blares (3 or 4 times), prompting you to crawl out of bed. In a zombie-like state you walk towards the coffee machine, waiting for the caffeine to wake you. As you look at the clock in panic at the little amount of time you have before you and the entire family must be out the door, your heart begins to race. You gulp down your coffee and become a tornado flying through the house, chanting instructions at other family members.
I don’t know about you but even reading that scenario is enough to get me feeling anxious. Unfortunately, it’s how many people start their day. The problem with this is that a routine such as the one described above is its ability to cause stress levels to spike and set the tone for the rest of the day. In fact, it’s the reason so many people get to the end of the day and collapse. Until this point, it’s like you’ve been running in panic mode.
This way of life is as unsustainable as it is unhealthy. Instead, the morning should be an opportunity to set a promising, optimistic tone for the day as this has been proven both in psychological and medical studies to improve overall wellbeing.
So how should your morning start?
By putting yourself first!
- Feeling tired when you wake up? Go to bed earlier. It will also help you to wake up earlier so you have more time in the morning and feel less rushed.
- Start the day with gentle exercise instead of coffee. In the morning your cortisol levels are at their best so you’ll naturally have more energy. As an added bonus, exercise seems to burn more calories in the morning before you eat breakfast.
- Start the day by focusing on you instead of others. Don’t start your day with your phone. Emails and social media can wait, you are more important. Try setting goals for the day or reflecting on your dreams and aspirations to create a positive can do attitude for the day ahead.
