If you’re a Victorian you are probably aware that around Cup Day every year the pursuit of the Great Home Grown Tomato Championship takes place. Now, there is no grand champion, there are many winners although not everyone who enters is a winner (some fall by the wayside and some just don’t have that deft tomato raising touch!).

tomatoesIt certainly is a sometimes frustrating and sometimes satisfying competition with oneself to produce
one’s own full flavoured, home grown tomatoes as close to Christmas a possible. But victory is sweet!

If you manage to grow your own juicy, real tomato flavour tomatoes (not necessarily at any time relative to Christmas) then you’re a winner. And I’ve done it! Here is the first fruit off my tomato plants… and they taste even better than they look!

Geez, hang on that’s putting it mildly… they taste sensational, like tomatoes used to taste before they were grown for supermarkets with no taste and insides that turn to water. Imagine having a generously sliced tomato on a sour dough toast with just a touch of pepper and salt.

That’s what I did this morning! Yummo!

I’ll return to normal sense and business tomorrow!
