In his wonderful Executive Briefing newsletter, my mate Derek Arden told me about Blue Monday, a malaise common in the UK, and how he recommends overcoming it!

“Blue Monday, like Black Friday, is an expression dreamt up by marketing departments. The third Monday in January is generally called Blue Monday as it is dark, cold and the bills for Christmas are arriving. However those of us who know how to reframe negatives into positives know it is getting lighter, the birds are beginning to sing earlier and the daffodils are coming up. Why not try a little James Brown “Wow – I feel good” in the morning rather than 6 cups of coffee?”

It’s great to learn that Derek shares similar views to me (as you know I start every day, rain, hail or shine, with a “f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c-!” and keep it going through the day). So whatever trick you use and whether you say it, sing it or have it sung, you can make sure even the bluest (or blackest) of days are always great days.

By the way, I do enjoy Derek’s newsletter for two reasons. One, because I get an English perspective on business and, two, because he’s a negotiation expert so I get great tips and ides. I’d recommend you sign up here
