You probably have seen the humorous Allianz insurance company TV commercials (and their advertising agency must love them coz they’d cost megabucks to make) where something goes wrong setting off a chain of events culminating in a call to the company. Whilst they probably work well to promote their insurance business I think there’s a very important takeaway for any business owner.

“Allianz Insurance, how can I help?”
What wonderful words to hear from a company when you have a problem! “How can I help?”
Maybe it’s the way you should be answering the phone too. In fact, in thinking about it, I’d better walk my talk and adopt the same approach here. We’ll use “Welcome to the Business Growth Centre, this is Winston! How can I help?”

Ah Winno, you have done it again. Or perhaps Allianz have done it.
You told me just a couple of years ago [around 30]; answer the phone on the third ring so as to give the caller time to think what it is they want to say and greet them with Welcome to Gisborne Optical Bruce speaking. Anything is better than; Press button 1, or … button 2, … button 3 etc. You then think they haven’t named what I think I need, oh bother. And then you wait for someone to say, ‘She isn’t here today ….’ AND you say Oh dear.
