When I’m talking about setting goals I often say one of the best things you can do is to find somebody who can already achieve what you want to achieve and copy them. I found this to be true when I wanted to run my first sub-3 hour Marathon a goal that many runners aspire to but so few actually achieve. Particularly somebody like me who had been an overwight, 100-a-day smoker and committed non-exerciser.

As a professional speaker I had to practice what I preach, so I had to find somebody who aleady achieved it! I looked around for guys who could do that that and whom I could copy. Or, better still, who would be willing to become my mentor.

The guy I found has been a mate for many years and it was great to celebrate one of his major birthdays with him the other night. Stand up retired Wing Commander, deer farmer and great runner, Ross Lawrence. I knew that he was a fantastic runner (a 2-42 for a marathon was Rossy’s best) so I reckoned that, if I could copy him, I’d have a big chance of getting close to being under 3 hours for the journey. My goal!

I asked Ross could I train with him and he readily agreed. So, when he ran hills for stamina, I ran hills for stamina; when he ran distance for endurance I ran distance for endurance; when he ran track for speed I ran track for speed; when he pumped iron for strength I pumped iron for strength; when he ate carbohydrates for energy I ate carbohydrates for energy; when he went home to bed with his missus… I went home!

And I’ll never forget that wonderful day, when he ran the 42 kilometres of the marathon in under 3 hours, I ran the 42 kilometres of the marathon in under 3 hours!

Because I copied what he could do I found that I could do it too! And it was easy too! I’d trained the right way to do it right!

So, if you’re looking to achieve a goal, find somebody that can do it and copy them. You’ll be amazed how easy it becomes.

Happy Birthday Ross! Thanks for mentoring me to a memorable lifetime achievement.
