I was out walking with my mates and our dogs and we decided we would inspect the progress of railway work connected with the huge construction program that is replacing level crossings around the metro area. Obviously we like to keep an eye on what’s happening to ensure they are doing it right!

Naturally these works are causing lots of frustration for regular commuters because of cancelled trains, buses replacing train services and so on.

That’s why we were delighted when we got to a station to find out the Level Crossing Removal Authority had set up a coffee stand just outside the station and was offering commuters a free orange juice and espresso coffee to relieve the travel stress. It was excellent orange juice and extra good coffee too… and they made it in a flash! So, no delay… grab it and go.

How good was that? And we weren’t even commuters but we were quickly and cheerfully given a coffee of our choice too.

We watched the commuters reacting. Firstly, surprise. Then, was there a catch? Finally, gratitude… a great free coffee.

What a sensational idea to calm the savage beast that is inside us all when our normal routine is upset. I thought the Level Crossing Removal Authority was a bunch of engineers who normally aren’t regarded as people people. But how well did they show heart here?

The question is what can you do to surprise your customers, clients or patients to show your heart and gratitude? And, as you can see, it isn’t expensive or rocket science.

P.S. And it’s not an unusual gesture because it appears that the Authority did this the other day at the Bayswater site.

On Tuesday 8 November, over 500 donuts were given out to public transport users as well as some locally sourced fruit.
