I’ve always been a big believer in holding seminars for lots of good reasons… the main one being that people think there will be a crowd so they can attend in safety and won’t be sold.
However, the crowd works for the presenter too. Because, if the presenter does it well enough, there tends to be a little bit of positive hysteria developed. You know what I mean… when you see a “funny movie” in a crowded theatre where everybody laughs, you laugh too. When you see the movie by yourself you wonder what was funny about it.
However, the biggest key to a successful seminar is to get people to attend. There is no point having a great presentation if it’s to an empty room.
And you’ve got to look at the alternatives someone has when it comes to deciding whether to attend your seminar.
They have to struggle to your seminar against the traffic, find a park, walk into a cold hall where they don’t know anybody, battle smiling people in suits who obviously want to sell them something and sit through a horrendously boring presentation.
Now I know yours won’t be like that, but that’s the perception they form (and you have to fight) when they contrast it with their more pleasant alternative which is to go home, spend time with the kids, have a glass or two of wine over a nice dinner and revel in quality time with their partner.
You don’t have to be stupid to see which is more preferable!
So, the invitation must be enticing, give them great reasons to attend and overcome all the perceived negatives.
Recently, I heard a radio advertisement for a seminar that was packed with great “reasons why” people should attend but it was the final masterstroke that got me in. It obviously wasn’t a mundane, boring seminar because it was billed as “a dinner table meeting over a glass of wine and cheese with other people like yourself.”
Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?
By the way if you want more on how to make your seminars very, very successful then I’ve produced a great audio product that spills the beans. Its called How to run successful seminars and it’s worth whatever price I’m asking. Buy it here.
