You may remember a few months ago I shared a commercial by MJ Hegar, a Democrat candidate for US Congress mid-term elections in the strongly Republican state of Texas. I was so impressed by it, that here it is again:
The results are now in, and MJ Hegar didn’t manage to unseat the incumbent Republican candidate, John Carter.
What’s interesting to note, though, is that the loss showed just how much ground MJ made in her bid for Congress. The Republicans have won her district with massive margins for many years now, including in 2016 when John Carter had 58.4% of the vote to Mike Clark’s (Democrat) 36.5%.
MJ Hegar managed to gain 47.6% of the vote, compared to John Carter’s 50.7%. A huge turnaround!
How much of that was due to the commercial she made going viral, and how much to other factors, we have no way of measuring. But there’s no doubt in my mind that her commercial was a huge contributing factor. It spoke brilliantly to my mantra “WIIFM”. She knew her target market, she knew what issues were important to them, and she made it clear that those issues were important to her as well. It answered “What’s In It For Me” in the voters’ minds – and it obviously won her votes.
I’m sure that US politics will see more of MJ.
