Hilarious if it wasn’t so true to life. Was on the tram the other day and the silence was deafening due to the fact almost everyone on this packed tram was on the phone except for one young lass reading a book. Thankfully there wasn’t anyone bellowing in a “private” conversation.
The strange thing is that mindfulness and “being in the now” is all the rage – people pay a lot of money to learn this at courses. But the vast majority of these obsessive phone addicts are so disconnected from reality let alone the now they get hit by cars in the here and now as they cross the road fully focused on their phones.
It’s a disorder and if that article in the Weekend Age is anything to go by – one which is now being professionally recognised as such with a range of treatments.
Yeah, Lynn I thoroughly agree with you and just yesterday was bike riding with my mates and where bike paths intersected legitimately with pedestrians getting to the train station they were walking with head down staring at phone completely oblivious to anything around them. I almost came off several times having to swerve to avoid them as they went across my path! Not restricted to the younger generation though… now the older people with hearing aids are oblivious to bikes coming up behind them, despite ringing of bike bell, shouting, etc. Personally, I dont want to be looking at my phone when I can be out and about enjoy the sights and sounds around me… that’s where I get my mindfulness quota!
