Ever driven to work and, after you arrive, wondered which way you came? Or can’t remember whether you stopped at a particular set of lights? Or you don’t remember whether you kissed your partner goodbye before you left? Sure you have. In fact, if it’s any consolation to you, we all have at some time or another. And the reason for it is simple… you are stuck in a rut, doing the same thing over and over.

After a while your mind works out that there is no value in retaining such repetitive tasks and automatically wipes the memories from your mental hard disc. You just get conditioned to doing those same old regular tasks on autopilot. Now, for many people, there’s a heck of a lot of life that’s repetitive so it’s not a good scenario if you want the old brain to be vibrant, alive and a fertile breeding ground for great ideas.

What’s happened is that you are stuck in a rut, a mental rut. And you know the definition of a rut? A rut is just a coffin with the ends knocked out! If you are in rut you are probably going to have a similar year this year to last year and the same year next year as this year rather than exciting, productive and fruitful years that just get better and better.

What’s the old saying? If you’re green you’re growing; if you’re ripe you’re rotten!

So, even if last year was a really great year you don’t just want to have a replay of it. You’ve got to grow and improve every year because that way you’ll get the most out of your life and your business.

To make sure that happens you must avoid falling into a mental rut… that endless coffin. That means doing things differently to what you’ve always done. Otherwise you’ll get the results you’ve always got. So let’s make sure we start some rutbusting right now. That way you can ensure that this year, this century, this millennium will give you everything you dream about.

So what you’ve got to do is change your thinking. Noted American motivational speaker Zig Ziglar says it’s “stinking thinking” which produces lousy results.

One of the ways to change your thinking is to change the things that you do without thinking – the mundane everyday autopilot things. If you change those you’ll snap off the autopilot and freshen up your brain and create huge leverage by changing the major things in your life too.

So here are some things you can do to change your every day activities which will get you out of the thinking rut and create a switched on brain that is alive and capable of both creating and acting on new ideas.

  • Once or twice a week get out of bed on the other side.
  • Once or twice a week clean your teeth holding the toothbrush in the other hand.
  • Open up your wardrobe and throw out all the clothes you’re waiting to come back into size or fashion.
  • Every couple of months re-arrange the furniture in your bedroom.
  • Take that drawer of stuff you’re keeping “just in case” and throw it in the rubbish.
  • Take a different route to work every few days.
  • Change what you listen to in the car.

So there they are. Some great ideas can change the way you think and, as a consequence, the results you will achieve. Use them and mine the magic of your mind.

Take the time to build improvement in your brain. This is going to be a great year and you can make sure it’s your best ever full of new thoughts and ideas. Get rid of “stinking thinking” and start creating results for yourself that until now you’ve only dreamt about.
