I’ve been a fan, no an admirer, of US Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, for many years and it was sad to learn of her passing this last weekend, but it was wonderful to be reminded of the achievements of this diminutive lady during her lifetime. For example, Radio National with Julian Morrow had this wonderful recap on Sunday morning. And, here’s the trailer for RBG, a movie that is really worth viewing.

What I learnt from RBG was that I was as chauvinistic as males could be back when I was young and on into early middle age. I didn’t know I was, because I just accepted things as they were at the time. Norms like women getting paid 75% of what men were paid for doing the same work; my wife, like all women, having to resign from her permanent position when she married me; women not being accepted into law or medical schools or not gaining positions for which they were just as qualified, or better, than men… the list goes on.

And, yes, I’m ashamed to admit that I have been guilty of blithely accepting things as they were in other areas in terms of race, colour and creed.

But I am trying hard to get better at realising that, just because things are as they are, doesn’t mean they are right or fair or just. I am trying to listen to more views, ask more questions and wonder why is it so?

Vale RBG!
