One of my favourite online destinations is closing down. And I’m just as much to blame as anyone else.

Sometime ago my inbox pinged familiarly to herald the arrival of a regular email from the book merchants I love and have recommended on my blog numerous times over the years. The company in question is Clouston & Hall, a real family company, operating out of Canberra who specialised in remaindered books. I must have spent thousands of dollars over the many years I’ve been dealing with them.

So, how come I am to blame? How did I contribute to their demise?

Well, in the many years before the internet, one of my regular happy monthly moments was receiving their bulging newspaper format catalogue in the mail, spending hours going through it, circling the great very readable bargains I wanted and faxing off my order form.

Afraid of speaking in public? Get Winston’s audio program that’s helped hundreds of people become cool, confident and convincing! More info here!

Then, a week or so later, my box of books arrived! Hours of joy browsing my purchases (yet, unfortunately not reading them all but they did look good on my bookshelf)!

However, as my familiarity with the web grew I found so many offers of alternative material, such as audio books, podcasts and downloadable radio programs that I had less and less time or interest in buying books. I’d look at them now on the web C & H catalogue and, whilst there were still books I’d love to buy, I knew I’d never read them.

My purchases slowed to a trickle, then stopped.

So, you can see I’m the one to blame and I’m sorry but I guess that’s progress – or is it?

Here’s the sad announcement:
