I first posted this over 10 years ago – and the concept still works like gangbusters!
This is a letter from Edward W. Worths’ Letters That Sell – a wonderful book that I use constantly. It’s called the ‘two aspirin letter’ – so it won’t surprise you to find that at the top of the letter there are two aspirins attached to capture the reader’s attention!
Stop making those mistakes that cost you money when it comes to advertising and promotional efforts. Great tips for success!
A Marketer's No Disaster Checklist
Good Morning Miss Smith!
If finding a reliable office cleaner is a headache… take two of these and call me in the morning.
It’s unfortunate that most office cleaners are unreliable. You get your office ready for cleaning and they don’t show up. You tell them what to clean and they forget to clean it. You ask them to be careful and things get broken. You insist on honesty and things disappear; you demand that the office be thoroughly cleaned – and it’s still dirty.
We will cure your office cleaning headaches! Guaranteed!
How? It starts at the top. I began Acme after many years as a corporate executive, because I saw a need for a professional office cleaning business. I know how to run a business where nothing matters except excellent service and customer satisfaction.
Acme provides you with a service you’ve always wanted. We refuse to tolerate mediocrity. To find out how easy it is to have your office cleaned quickly and professionally, call me at Acme today.
The last thing you will get is a headache.
Sincerely yours
Fred Smythe

Most people who are perceived to have a problem have a headache… so by taping a couple of aspirins to the letter you will grab their attention. And of course, it creates an intriguing bulkiness in the envelope which entices people to open it. Be creative – vary the letter and use tea bags, candy, or send a jar of mustard (“I’m as keen as mustard!”) or whatever fits in with what you are offering.

How can it be improved?
First of all, some really good case histories would really explain what you can do and very, very importantly it needs at least one really very credible testimonial. I’d write your message in mire colloquial language too!
