The other day the venerable author of these ramblings was having a birthday and, in a rare moment of generosity, decided to shout his missus and a couple of friends a celebratory lunch.

Using Mr Google, he found a restaurant that was all he was looking for and immediately completed the digital booking form to reserve a table. He was impressed that it included a question asking “Is this a celebration, if so what?”

Feeling jolly good about that he responded “Birthday”, pressed the send button and waited for confirmation. Within moments a response cam back noting all the details including that it was a birthday celebration.

And then he sat back dreaming of the ways that this Restaurant would make his birthday memorable.

Someone should have said, as was uttered in that memorable movie, The Castle, “Tell him he’s dreaming.”

This is the classic that has helped thousands of people understand the nuts and bolts of basic business. If you haven't heard it, this is one you must get now.
How to turn your business into a Money Making Machine

Coz from the moment we entered the establishment until we left, there was not one, single, solitary mention or recognition by any employee of the restaurant about the birthday we were celebrating. Not even a candle in a scoop of ice cream.

So, why did they ask? Why raise expectations if you can’t or don’t deliver?

It would have made my day and I would probably have told everyone about “this great restaurant!”
