Like most people around the world (I was going to say in Australia till I realised that internationally everyone is pretty much in the same boat!) I wanted to get my booster vaccination, hopefully to prevent me coming down with the dreaded son of Covid, the omicron virus.

Getting the injection was a pretty difficult job because thousands of people were thinking pretty much like me! Most GP’s were booked out for weeks and could offer no special favours to their regular patients with many of the government and pharmacy run centres simply overwhelmed.

My son gave me a tip off about a pharmacy to call and I managed to get an appointment for the shot later the same day. Lucky me!

The plan was simple. Turn up 5 minutes before the appointed time, stand suitably socially spaced to check in and then wait for your name to be called.

It was then that I saw that ugly word! What was it?

“Queue”!

Yep, what an ugly word! Queue!

It suggests hours of waiting, tired legs, people standing too close and coughing all over you and other assorted harms.

Yet, our American friends don’t even know the word queue… it’s not in their vocabulary.

They say, “Stand in line” and isn’t that a much gentler instruction? Not harsh and grating but soft and melodic!

The moral of my story… strive to find the right word for the situation. Suggest calmness rather than anxiety, peace not war.

And there are many situations where choosing the right word will make an amazing difference.
