Last weekend I had a great time with my bike riding mates riding part of the Great Victorian Rail Trail which follows the route of a former railway line from Tallarook to Mansfield and Alexandra about 100 kilometres north-east of Melbourne.

Now, we didn’t ride the whole trail. We rode about 50km return, including scones, jam and cream at a shearing shed and lunch at the turnaround point. The highlight was the climb to go through the Cheviot Tunnel.

The point of this tourist piece is that at the lunch spot we discovered the Cremona Bridge on the Goulburn River. It was designed by the great engineer Sir John Monash, but a long time ago a Shire Engineer thought it was over engineered so he removed some supporting columns. You can see what happened to the bridge.

It was a timely reminder – that’s what happens when you get involved in changing something that doesn’t concern you or you don’t know anything about! In other words, remember that old adage…

If it ain’t broke, don’t break it!
