I’m writing this on Good Friday eve and, having just returned from a couple of days in a country Victorian tourist town, I am simply amazed at the number of hospitality businesses that will be closed tomorrow.
Now, I know staff award wages rise on this particular public holiday by horrendous amounts, up to 3 times the normal daily rate I understand. But in the town I was visiting, I doubt there will be any place to get a meal or coffee other than good old faithful Maccas… and without casting aspersions I reckon there’s a million people like me who’d be prepared to pay to get something a little better.
In fact, I reckon they would be prepared to pay lots more than normal to get it! After all, they’re on holiday and eating out with friends for breakfast or having lunch and a glass of wine in the sun is what holidays are all about.
But, no, no-one seems prepared to challenge the belief that they can’t cover costs on a holiday and their hospitality doors remain firmly shut.
One of my great old rules should prevail here… do what others don’t do! Open your doors, charge more (even to the point of pain) and watch the patrons and their money roll in.
