Recently one of my dentist clients told me that he had asked his team members to go into the shopping mall, approach passers by and give out flyers. They had not been getting good responses. Were there any tips I could give to help them out?
Well, of course there were, so I had a chat with the team and gave them some suggestions. So what were my thoughts for any situation where you have to approach strangers, get their attention, stimulate their interest and get a result (such as get some information into their hands)?
Well, let’s say it’s you out there in the mall. To make sure you can do it, there are a couple of really important questions you must ask yourself (and if you answer “no” to any one of them, the task isn’t wrong but you are!):
- Do you believe in the product or service passionately?
- Are you really enthusiastic about it?
- Can you catch someone’s eye and crack a big smile?
- Do you have something of interest or value that gets attention (like a rubber duck, chocolates, a tasty sample, a balloon, whatever) to give them?
- Can you positively and enthusiastically smile as you hand it to them and say “Hello, we are just introducing our dental practice/ product/ store/ to people like you…”

If you can do all that (and remember the best way to get good at it is practice, rehearse and drill till you can do it naturally) then you’ll get quite amazing results.
Really it’s all about attitude isn’t it? If you think you can… you can; if you think you can’t… you can’t.

Now that I’m got myself a gig overseeing fundraising for a charity, that’s good advice. cheers … Bernard
Well done Bernard and all the best!
