The other day I was at a meeting where a member of the club made a suggestion which appeared to meet with the approval of the majority of members.

The Chairman, having heard the loud mutterings of approval, announced that the member who made the suggestion should put a sheet at the door “next month” so that members who wanted to be part of the idea could register their names upon arrival.

Do you reckon that idea had any chance of success? No, it had been effectively killed right there and then!

Leave it for a month, remember to fill in the sheet at the door, even remember the idea? Bah humbug!

The Chairman, or failing him the member who made the suggestion, should have asked members who wanted to be part of it to put their hands up and got names there and then or, alternatively but not as effectively, should have announced they would be at the door and collect names of the interested on the way out.

The lesson is carpe diem… seize the moment! Strike whilst the iron is hot
