One of the things that really gets to me (he says as he rids himself of just a little bit of angst) is when people in service positions call me “Mate” on first meeting!

I’ve always been brought up to respect people upon meeting them for the first time and address them as “Sir”, “Madam”, “Mister”, “Madam” or whatever.

Once acquainted, it was okay to relax into a more informal style dependent on the feedback between you and the new acquaintance.

But, when I walk into a store and the shop assistant asks, “What are you looking for mate?” it certainly grates! And when the waiter says, “Follow me, mate” as he shows me to a table I want to do a u-turn (but don’t as I waited far too long for the table!).

Politeness, respect and courtesy win me. What about you?

This is the classic that has helped thousands of people understand the nuts and bolts of basic business. If you haven't heard it, this is one you must get now.
