It seems that one of the greatest challenges people face in social situations is startling a conversation with someone they don’t know.
That’s why I thought you’d like this piece of advice from my good mate, and negotiation expert, Derek Arden (who obviously had a great line into the late and great Queen Mother).
“What keeps you busy?” This was the Queen Mother’s question when she was in conversation with people.
What a nice gentle way to explore information when you are networking or greeting someone. Difficult to upset anyone with that enquiry!
However, make sure you pay the person full attention with your eyes, ears and senses.
Don’t do what someone did last week. Start looking over my shoulder, basically signalling there was someone more interesting over my shoulder.
