Here‘s a notice that’s in the toilet of a cafe we bike riders use frequently for our morning tea.

Now its bluntness hasn’t stopped us from using the cafe, but we do reckon they could be more subtle in their message.

For example they could say, “Please help us to care for you by keeping this toilet clean!“ Or even the old staple, “We aim to please, you aim too please!”

I like the way that good old McDonald’s do it. They simply have a chart placed conspicuously on the wall which shows when the toilets were cleaned and when they will be cleaned next. It reminds you of their commitment to cleanliness and subtly reminds you too.

Subtlety must not be so subtle that it doesn’t get the message across but it does help to say it in a way that people will feel good about.
