After years of sitting down and watching short slabs of it, recently I finally got around to watching the brilliant movie Gettysburg. It took me so long to find the time coz it runs for 4½hours and needed lots of concentration coz of the many southern accents.

It’s about one of the tremendous battles of the American Civil War. Not a pretty or a nice film but nevertheless a great one dealing with perhaps the major battle of that dreadful war.

Wikipedia and other references say “Film critics loved it, many historians were amazed by the thought and detail that went into the making of the film. But, of course, despite it being one of the most historically accurate movies ever made, Gettysburg had to make some changes to the momentous battle for the sake of runtime and storytelling.

Utterly superb dramatization of the turning point battle of the Civil War. A clash so enormous in scale that whoever won, was destined to win the war. Brilliantly directed and screen written with top notch moving performances by all. Almost makes you understand why so many people are into those reenactment things. ”

So why did I watch it? Simply coz it reminded me of the futility of war and the old fashioned way it was fought… subdue the opposition with cannon fire then send in the infantry to shoot, bayonet and kill! With the current world events in Gaza and Ukraine, when will men ever learn?
